"rpm: command not found" I'm really a NEWBIE!

Yesterday I have installed my first linux server "SMOOTHWALL" on a server at my job. This SMOOTHWALL box is really easy to set up and anyone can install it.
Now I am using SSH to connect to this server from home and everything works fine but I need to install other packages that smoothwall don't have.

Every time I get "rpm: command not found".

How can I download and install other packages (lynx, mc, wget...)?

hey man, i'm a linuxnoob myself but i understand a bit of what you need to do.

you're gonna need to download the source for the rpm package and compile it yourself. these files are generally gonna be in a <filename.tar.gz> or <filename.tar.bz> or something like that. basically you can use the wget command to grab it off the net. what i do is find the file using internet explorer on my windows box and hover my mouse over the link that initiates the download, look at it in the bottom left corner of the internet explorer and type that url using the wget command in the linux box.

i.e. wget http://www.redhat.com/downloads.what...isufind.tar.gz

dig?

after u get it you'll have to unzip it and then untarball it or whatever the terminology is. get to the next step and post here if you get stuck.

Every time I get "rpm: command not found".

You can install rpm package from your installation CD's.

Step 1: Insert your Disk 1 and boot your system.
Step 2: type linux rescue
Setp 3: when you got shell then type this rpm -ivh --root /mnt/sysimage
Setp 4: chroot /mnt/sysimage and test weather rpm is working or not ?
Step 5: exit
Step 6: exit

How can I download and install other packages (lynx, mc, wget...)?

You can install these packages from your Installation CD's.

# rpm -ivh wget-x.y.z.rpm
# rpm -ivh mc-x.y.z.rpm
# rpm -ivh lynx-x.y.z.rpm
