Hi everyone.
I need some comment on Debian.
I have using Fedora since FC2, and have always loved Linux. Recently I installed Ubuntu Jaunty (and later Karmic) and was surprised by the fast response of it. So I am almost migrating from Fedora to Ubuntu.
But I have a problem with Ubuntu:
Since the Ubuntu installation media contains only the base packages (unlike Fedora) and I don’t have access to high-speed Internet, I cannot update the packages I need. I know Ubuntu is based on Debian, and also know that Debian comes in 5 DVDs.
Now,
I need some comment on Debian:
How responsive is it? Is it like Ubuntu?
Is it as user friendly as Ubuntu?
Main areas I use Linux are:
Programming (C++, Java and some PHP).
Using NS2.
I also need good multimedia support.
What is your idea about Debian?

And yes I am sure it is 5 DVDs plus 1 update DVD.

Yeah Debian install is MASSIVE. For me, Debian is a great OS, but its a very "vanilla" distro. All those DVD’s have massive amounts of software that you probably wont even use. I think where Ubuntu wins is some of its custom software in regards to things like wireless drivers, graphics card support, etc. If you like to tinker with things though, Debian is very nice. Havent used it for many years, last time it was quite a manual process to get installed, but ran like a rocket when it was finished. I think I have become lazy, and am now used to the whole automated Ubuntu installs.

There is an Ubuntu DVD that you can mail order for around ten bucks (in the US). I’m sure the DVD will contain the multimedia stuff you need. What little is left you can apt-get from a coffee shop for a two dollar cup of coffee. Similarly, the first Debian DVD should be enough.
Omidkamangar, why don’t you try Ubuntu? I think it is only one DVD.

Yeah, Ubuntu is available as a CD, or as a DVD with more packages. I think you still need to download the mp3 codecs, etc from apt-get though, because isn’t there licensing restrictions for that in certain countries?

If you really want to try out Debian just do the netinstall, the image is less than 200MB, then you download what you need from you package selections.
