    kernel compile error

    What is this?

    Code:
    Warning: '/proc/partitions' does not match '/dev' directory structure.
        Name change: '/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/disc' -> '/dev/hdc'
        The kernel was compiled with DEVFS_FS, but 'devfs=mount' was omitted
            as a kernel command-line boot parameter; hence, the '/dev' directory
            structure does not reflect DEVFS_FS device names.
    How do I fix this? Or if I need to recompile my kernel, where is this error originated? I'm compiling kernel 2.4.23 on Debian testing.

    TIA

    hello,
    are you using DEVfs for stuff besides USB?

    Re:kernel compile error

    Ah NO. I compiled USB support because I have the UBS port and if I needed to use it in the future, I could. Other than that, what's DEVfs?

    devfs replaces the stuff in the /dev/ directory with a filestystem that lives in ram - kinda like /proc .

    This message could just be informational. If you can boot, it's not likely that this is a big problem.

    If it makes you feel better, you can install devfsd, append the kernel arg suggested by the warning, and you should be ok.

    devfs is supposed to be backward compatible with the old-style 'major <no> minor <no.>' style of referencing devices. Haven't played with it enough to really break things ;-)
