Re:Your PC
Umm, I have been piecing my shit from all over my life. My parts no longer have recipts attatched. And I have the memory of a fruitfly. My guess is ~$4000 lifetime total for alot of shit. Not including software. Including crap like buying new cards (POS Linksys NICs for example) over and over again. I have learned who is an ally and who isnt.
I have had around 6 PCs built from new, used, and donated parts. Most expensinve are CPU's, Mainboards and HD's. Most of the rest can be had for <$150 so ...
But Let me see what I can recall :
MSI Mainboard (hell if I recall the model) with an Athlon TB 900 (275)
768 MB Crucial ($400)
80 GB WD (110)
40 GB WD (150)
SB 512 PCI (70)
My Cambridge SW speakers (4.1) (100)
POMS (Pice of monkey shit) Linksys NICs (all 4 sofar at 30 each = $120)
Case & floppy (40)
nifty PSU (65)
External CDR (130)
Maxtor USB2 card (40)
Creative Modem (60)
Keyboard Mouse (~65 total I think)
Sexy Red Hat mouse pad (5)
Monitor IBM P70 (free)
Crappy USB IBM webcam (30)
DVD drive (70)
This totals $1730
Now worth $0.24 or so.
I dunno what else. Software dont count. Nor does the expendatutre of CDR funds.

Re:Your PC
Not sure I'd want to post what my stuff cost me. Although due to not buying proprietary systems, I've been able to save a lot upgrading. Most upgrades have been just buying a new processor. One system has been upgraded 4 times, and will certainly be upgraded more.

Re:Your PC
OEM/Computer builders have to make money too. Their $100-$400 price hike usually includes support, an OS, a computer allready assembled and sometimes even X months of dial up access.
Here is about what I paid for my stuff ....
Mobo - $100
Athlon XP 1700+ - $80
512MB Registered DDR RAM - $250
19" Monitor - $270
DVD-ROM - $10
10X CD-Burner - $30
ATI-Radeon 7200 - $70
100G 7200RPM Drive - $80
20G 5400RPM Drive - Gift ($0)
Logitech Wireless/Optical Mouse - $70
Monsoon Speakers/Sub - $50
All about: $1010
Don't forget my main system is evolutionary, I slowly replace/change items so prices are generally high when I buy them (as I usually buy the best of the time when I upgrade).
