Sound recording from line in

Im trying to find some info on a good program for recording from the line in port on my sound card so I can then transfer it to mp3 or standard cd format. My wife is gonna be singing, and I would like to get to the point where I can record directly off of the output from our soundboard (macke 1604 vlz pro) using the line in on a puter running probably redhat 7.3. I have tried the standard sound recording progs that come with redhat, but it gets traslated horribly and sounds like monkey getting thier sacks hammered with meat tenderizers. Anyone know anything right off? Google didnt offer a whole lot of info either.

Well the best I think at the moment is audacity. It will record as good as your soundcard can translate. Unfortunatly, there is no 'Protools', 'Cubass', or 'Cakewalk Sonar' for Linux that I know of.

Are you (pre-)amping her mic or are you going directly into the card? If it seems really scratchy it's probably due to the line in setting is set to high. I've noticed when I record my guitar, bass or vocals I have to set the input volume to about 2 (on a scale of 1-10) else it starts to radicaly distort.
