    SuSE Sold Out to Novell

I don't know but that sounds like great news. Novel having the rights to what they have. Hopefully this will be best for the linux community.

It could go either way. My faith in Red Hat has been shaken a bit lately. It was all good and fine when they dropped the albatross workstation version, but now they're actively recommending that linux not be used for desktop systems. This, on the same day Novell acquires SuSE. So Novell now has at its disposal a kickass server, a kickass Desktop Environment, a .NET implementation, and a connector to MS Exchange. All ready-to-go, open up the box and ship. They also have the expertise and experience to pull this off the right way.

This could end up being very positive. NOVELL DON'T BLOW THIS!

Here's a link for notes from the press conference. IMHO, this looks like a VERY good thing for Linux.

    Re:SuSE Sold Out to Novell

I think that this is a synergistic move on both Novell's and Suse's part. In American corporations, Novell has a lot of credibility. Their products could very well create an enhanced market situation for Linux (in other words, they have a compelling financial reason for making sure that their products work well with Linux) in America. Since Suse is very well respected in Europe, this gives Novell a better chance at making inroads into the European market. The deeper the inroads that are made, the more profit there is to be had. The greater the profit, the more likely it is that Novell will work with the wonderful people at Suse to make sure that Novell's products work as flawlessly as possible with Linux.

Certainly there is always the possibility that Novell will simply be a lead weight around Suse's neck. That is just a risk that we, the Linux community, should be willing to support. With many IT departments worldwide asking for better supported networking solutions that don't cost two arms, a leg, and a decent comb-over, the Novell/Suse partnership could very well be one of the so-called "killer apps" that Linux advocates have been clamering for all these years.

    Just my 200 wan.

    Cheers

No .... they are doing the same as they always have for their customers of RHEL.

    Novell Linux?
or Suse Linux with a minor blurb that Suse is owned by Novell?

    Hmmm

Suse 9 is out by the way

This can't be a good thing at all. Sounds like pure Linux will be almost extinct soon. Who would think the the economy would replenish itself off Linux in such a short amount of time?

Even though RedHat is throwing some curve balls, it's stock continues to gradually go up.

Red Hat stock may rise, but the quality of the new release, Fedora Core 1 (Yarrow) leaves much to be desired. SuSE 9.0 is the best Linux distribution I have ever seen.
