    Red Hat tells customers, 'No more freebies!"

    "In an email to Red Hat Network customers, the company has announced today that it "...will discontinue maintenance and errata support for Red Hat Linux 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 8.0 as of December 31, 2003," that "Red Hat will discontinue maintenance and errata support for Red Hat Linux 9 as of April 30, 2004," and that "Red Hat does not plan to release another product in the Red Hat Linux line."" Want a stable Red Hat version? It will only be $179.00 for the most basic workstation version.

    Current fedora is probably like debian testing, but who says that's future fedora as well? I'll give fedora a chance, it's at 0.95 right now.. looks like they're planning to hit a 1.0 release in the not-so-distant future?

    I just canceled my download of Red(sellout)Hat after reading this article. I was becoming tired of the tedious manual configuring of Slackware after downloading and installing Slack 9.1, so I decided to go back to RedHat after a very long absence. After reading this article I canceled the download of the three install iso's. Screw RedHat. I'm staying with Slackware.

    I've always looked at Red Hat and Suse and a few others as profit-oriented companies. They are out there to make a buck. I don't blame them for it. At least they support open-standards, which is a lot more important than free (as in beer) software.
    Fortunately there are a lot of truely community-supported distros, like Debian, Slack, Gentoo and a lot of others. If you want free (as in beer AND speech) software, stick with one of them.

    Lucky I run Debian.

    I don't blame RH but it's what happen to those who went IPO. Investors demand profits and the company has to deliver it with all means.

    I personally like the way Libranet does. Charge for the latest and greatest but free for some older stuff.
