hi ash,
i think any distro should work because it is 32 bit compatible, f course much recompiling would be in order.
Is there any free Linux versions for AMD64? Debian's isn't production and RH and SuSE's are all super expensive.

The 2.6 and Fedora Core 2.4 have the option to use the Opteron/AMD64.
SuSE 9.0 is available for AMD64 and priced at $120 I think that's the only consumer distro available at the moment with 64bit support.

SuSE's server software is almost $800! I'm sure it's worth it but thats a lot of money!

Gentoo and SuSE (FTP) arer the ones I know off.
I talked to SuSE yesterday and found out you have to pay $650 USD per yer for updates/security updates on AMD64 SuSE. Wow, thats insane. It makes Red Hats $1800 USD AMD64 port seem more attractive since you don't pay yearly and have longer life cycles ... but still I swear I am paying MS prices for Linux. Linux is better but holy crap it's suppose to be cheaper!
??? Why do you keep referring to the SuSE server edition? You can get a boxed SuSE 9.0 for AMD64 for $119.95:
SUSE LINUX 9.0
Full 64-Bit Power for Home Users - Only with SUSE LINUX 9.0 for AMD64
SUSE is proud to be the world's first operating system manufacturer to present a 64-bit operating system and applications that make full use of the high performance and speed of the Athlon(tm) 64 processor - right on time for the market introduction of the processor!
Because it is a 1U server with some specific hardware that is supported in enterprise Linux versions only ... unless you do it yourself which is fine by me but I don't think that admins know much more than installing rpms.
