    Can anyone pls. help me on how to enable it in vi (elvis), joe, and vim (as root).

    I'm not sure on slack, but here's a surefire method that always works. Look in your vim installation directory for a file called "vimrc". Edit it, and try to find a commented line that says "syntax on". Uncomment it. That should be that!
