how make a crude serial connection?

Is there a way to connect two computers via their serial ports and send something simple between them?

Say type text into one computer and the text appears on the screen of another. I mean it must be simple enough.

sure - you can open mini-com, have both PCs set to same setttings, e.g. 115200, 8n1 and for the cable going bewtween the two use a null modem (crosses wires).
