What would be the best server for me and how to set it up??

Hi guys,

I am running Redhat Linux 9 which some of you guys should know that. Here is my question. How could setup a server on my Linux system and which server would be best for me?? Any opions?? Please reply back. Thanks guys.

Well,

chances are your machine is already running some services as it is.
Network,ssh, and X are services. If your machine is running any of these then it is a 'server'.

Do you just want to learn how to administer a particular service? Why don't you try installing Apache from source? I would suggest version 1.3.28 which is very stable and easy to compile/install.

Agreed.

You are having enough issues. If you think you are having problems now, just wait until troubleshooting network services. It can takes days of 12 hrs at it each to get some things sorted out.

Alright man. I'm getting a little frustrated with this Wine shit. I won't touch a server until i get my problems gone.

Well wine is a nasty whore, but when it works its nice.

I gave up on getting it to run Counterstrike, but it runs Diablo 2, Warcraft 3, Starcraft, Delta Force, Septerra Core, Fallout, Quake 2, Unreal 1, and a few others that I forget that I own rather well.

Its really hit and miss with wine. Wine ... consider that a second thought and you will be less frustrated. There are native linux apps that are far better in most situations. The only exception is games. WineX is the best for that. I havent used the free one, I pay for the non-free one. That works REALLY well. $5 a month btw.

What do you mean by "server"?

I mean to use a server to upload and to download from a server. That what i mean.

Do you have an extra computer to attempt this feat, or did you wanted to use your computer as a server for other people?
