Thread: USB Flash Drive on RH 7.1

USB Flash Drive on RH 7.1

    Two key difficulties:
    1. The drive mounts, you write to it, umount it, re-mount it again, and
the stuff you just wrote is no longer there.

    2. Is there a way to configure such that non-root can mount/umount it ?

    Thanks in advance.

    hello,
1st I would upgrad the kernel - that is a quite old kernel with redaht 7.1, and a newer kernel may help. i assume usb-storage is loaded as a module.

for non-root users edit fstab and add owner to the entery of people able to mount it
    e.g.
    Code:
    /dev/sda1 /mnt/flash/ vfat noauto,owner 0 0
assumes of course that it is tied to /dev/sda0

hth - and welcome to linux junior

Well, I have to second pb's motion on a new kernel. The current stuff is near usb godliness, better than alot of win32 support

I'd love to upgrade, but that option os not available.

The system in question has to run, SUPPORTED, with Oracle. The next sep available from 7.1 is Red Hat Enterprise Linux and we are due to make that jump after next January.

Has any one seen this "disappearing files" behavior I am describing ?

    hello,
i have not seen disapperaing files. be sure to give it a minute or so before unmounting it - the flash devices are kinda slow.

    Sequence goes like this:
    mount
    Copy stuff to it.
Do an "ls" to see that things were copied.

    umount

    mount (again)
    ls
    (nothing)

try waiting a few moments after the unmount.
