7 years is a long time, but I think because of how intergrated it is in society as of now, that it would be even longer then this.

After all it's what people use at work, school, and home. The only reason for someone to even attempt to change is because they become disatisfied with it, and even then those are the ones that know the smallest amount about their PC's.

I don't believe Linux has a chance at taking the desktop market until it becomes totally automatic like Windows. Some of you may say this is already the case, but it is not. As of now most things are installed with source code. Until installation of all programs becomes as easy as Windows, then I don't think Windows is going to simply die away.

    Just my opinion.

valid opinion, but i think when business switches, which is the majority, then desktops will.

You know, that could very well be the deciding factor, however even if Linux becomes the victor in the Desktop market, I'm sure some Joe is still going to be running Windows, at least until it's not supported anymore. That would be in the case of Microsoft going bankrupt though.

It won't die (and linux won't get ahead in the desktop arena) until more GAME designers create better games for *nix.

with games like UT2k3 coming out, that are windows\linux capable, im sure the gaming department wont be a problem.

Yeah, I think Linux is getting the gaming department down these days. Alot of new stuff is being produced for it. However there is alot of new stuff that still isn't.

However on that note. WineX is taking care of the stuff that's Win32 only. They are doing a good job about it as well.

I still stand that Win32 is going to be around for much longer then 7 years IMO.

Re:predict the future, when will windows die?

HAHA... I have been using some variant of *nix since 1997 or 1998 (can't remember when exactly I was introduced) and have been running it on at least one box in the house since 1999. I have winxp on my laptop because i have to compile my homework using Visual Studio .NET and I have winxp on my wife's computer because she needs it in order to talk to associates in her home business. (They insist on using the chat.msn.com for their online training, etc... I'm working on converting them to IRC, but only recently have I had any success in convincing them to switch) My wife agrees with me, but she needs to be able to talk to these people and chat.msn.com using ActiveX controls to lock out certain browsers and platforms.

The only game I play lately is Neverwinter Nights, and there's a linux port for it that works fine, but why use it when my laptop is the fastest machine in the house and runs windows

I only mentioned that linux will not move to the desktop arena as a serious competitor until games are developed for it that NORMAL PEOPLE want to play (not geeks like us) because those normal people are the ones who decide where the desktop arena goes.
