Where are those links you posted in reference to adding "pretty" fonts to your linux/bsd desktops?
pretty fonts - those come as default now - just install the Bitstream Vera TTF fonts and the lastest version of freetype and you are set to go. At least GNOME has some good defaults for font hinting. But if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
