    install PCI modem

Hey guys. I currently have a winmodem in my machine and i want to put the PCI modem in that i have. I took out the winmodem and then i try to put the modem in one of my PCI slots but the modem won't slide or go into place like a modem would go in. The winmodem slides in easily. Does anyone know why modem mode won't go in?? I'm pretty sure i got 1 or 2 PCI slots available and i do know i have 1 AGP slot available. Actually i might i PCI available because i took out the network card because i don't use that and my modem goes in PCI that includes the PCI modem that i bought and the winmodem i have. I have a PCI video card. There is nothing in the AGP slot. Please reply back. Thanks.

    Re:install PCI modem

A winmodem can (and most are) PCI modems. PCI is just one architecture, like ISA, EISA, PCMCIA, etc. Winmodem is a controllerless modem.

Of course, that is not very relevant anyway. Could it be an ISA modem instead of PCI? If it is an ISA modem and you don't have ISA slots, it won't fit. ISA connections are longer than PCI's.

Let's put it this way. It's a PCI modem but not a winmodem so it should work under Linux. This is what the box says that the modem came in. Internal 56K PCI modem. I have the box right here in front of me. I bought it out of state. Please reply back. Thanks trickster.

TRy removing all cards, and putting the modem first, then all the other cards.

First trickster you was right on your first reply. It's bigger then my slot. Second the place i bought it at i guess they lied to me. I wanted to have Redhat running.

You appear to have an ISA card. I would bring the card back to the store, if you can. I don't know what price you paid for it, but, you should be able to get an external modem (usb or serial) for just a little bit more than you probably paid for that modem (internal hardware modems are not much cheaper than external models). USB modems are supposed to be Linux compatible (anyone know if I'm right or wrong?), but I suggest the serial modem. I have one for my computer and it has worked beautifully.

    Cheers

Or, try to get a winmodedm with a conexant or a PCTel chipset. They work good, and are easy to install, and you can get them for $10-$15 at almost any small pc store. or get it online from Pricewatch.

How easy are the conexant versions to install? I've got one in my kids computer right now, but I've never been able to get the drivers to work right (that was about two years ago, though).
