Just remembered a little bit of information that might help.
debian's bf2.4 kernel also picks up my disk as /dev/ataraid/d0p*
I dunno if this helps
Hi
I have a P4P800 (ICH5 Southbridge) motherboard with a s-ata hard disk.
Ive applied Alan Cox's ac4 patch to the 2.4.21 kernel source, and enabled CONFIG_SCSI_ATA and CONFIG_SCSI_ATA_PIIX in the kernel options. As far as Ive read the s-ata disk is placed in /dev/sda (for first s-ata device) so I added root=/dev/sda4 to my lilo.conf, and changed my root and swap partitions to point to /dev/sdaX. But when I boot on my ac patched kernel I get the message "Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root filesystem on 8:20" or somthing very similar.
I can't check if the kernel actually picked up the device because it scrolls so fast, and shift+pgup fails to work. As the rootfs don't mount It won't write anything to disk. So im left with guess'n'check.
debian's bf2.4 kernel can mount the rootfs when in slow "compatible" mode.

Lilo.conf: http://www.homepages.paradise.net.nz/targett/lilo.txt
Thanks for your help.

hello,
i attempted to find some information on this and besides a couple of kernel threads have not been able to - can you please post a link to the patch
Are you sure it should be /dev/sda4? Try some different numbers perhaps. I have an RCA Lyra mp3 player that I mount as /dev/sda1. Give /dev/sda, sda0, sda1, sda2, etc... a shot.
Ok
SCSI_ATA link: http://lwn.net/Articles/33624/
Its also in the Alan Cox 2.4.21-ac4 patch.
There is also a whole thread over at insecure.org about it. I believe under the topic "Intel ICH5 Hang During Boot" or somthing along those lines.
A friend told me just recently about the device being on /dev/mdaX
I will check this out and see if it works.
And in repsonce to Tyr_7BE's post, The disk has four partitions, and the fourth is my linux one, I assume scsi does the same partition labling as everything else.
Thanks for your help.
Just a question that popped to mind.
would disabling IDE help?
Hello,
From the some of the stuff I read - yes, and is needed.

Hrum Ill try that then.
But one question, if I disable IDE, how am I supposed to access the other three disks in my pc?
perhaps you cna load it as a module, from what i read it was to stop teh ide controller from grabbing control first.
