My workplace just implimented a very restrictive firewall, only allowing outgoing and incoming packets on port 80 and 443. That means that instant messenger is out of action until I figure out a work around. I figure that the network admin closing off traffic like that was a direct challenge to my ability to get around it.
First I changed the sshd server on my home machine to run off of port 80, that way I can connect via a ssh client at work. I can tunnel VNC over ssh so I have desktop access to my home pc, and I can run AIM off my home machine while VNC'd into it. But that is impractacle and burns up alot of network bandwidth. I have also began using naim (ncurses AIM client) over ssh, but I know there has to be a way to tunnel AIM over ssh, but I think there is a limitation with the Oscar protocol AIM uses 'cause I can't get it to connect.
I was wondering if anyone else has messed with this issue at all? I was thinking of setting up a proxy on my home machine, but then I remembered I have NO idea how to set up a proxy and if that would even solve my problem.
Ideas?

you can set up a vpn, i would google for how, because i'm way to lazy to
1) remember how
2) write it out
Yeah, anything you can remember would be helpful.
What software would I use to create a vpn between my work machine (Windows) and my home machine (Linux), I wasn't aware of any VPN software for Linux.. Don't you think that would kind of be overkill just for AIM tho?
You know you can setup AIM to connect through a proxy right? This might be your best bet.

Sorry, didn't see your reply. No, I never got it working. The admin put the whole network into full lock downmode, so other than a few select sites, I can't even use a web browser. Sheesh, I guess I am gonna have to...start doing some work. Ah crud. Of all the injustices.
I am looking at using a program called httport that can circumvent the proxy, but it leaves tell tale logs entries. I am not sure I want to give up what little network access I still have if the facist network admin figures out what I am doing.
