    WineX performance issues

    Greets!

I have RedHat 9 of course running here and have come to the conclusion that it is not the best OS for WineX at the moment. RedHat is great stability wise, but is not playing well performance wise with WineX.

So this leads me to one of three streets I can stroll down :

    1) Tough it. Stick with what RedHat offers, and hope that Transgamings fixes it.

    2) Go with SuSE 8.2.

    3) Go with LindowsOS 4 (when it comes out next week).

What does anyone else have to say? I hope that Stryder isn't the ONLY person here to dick with Lindows at all ;D Anyway, I have heard alot of good from users that actually give it a try.

    Your opinions !

compile your own kernel - i am running rh9 too and when i use the rh kernel it moves very slow, i load up my own compiled kernel, obtained from www.kernel.org, not the source to the one redhat ships.

it has done wonders for me using winex.

I vote for Mandrake 9.1 :-D But either way, winex sucks, its buggy on any box

    Re:WineX performance issues

Thanks paul, will try that out.

And rick -- not quite. I have been lurking around on the Transgaming forums and on several distro maillists, and I dont know which is worse RedHat or Mandrake when it comes to WineX and performance issues. From what I gather SuSE seems to be the best choice as far as mainstream distro (meaning more than 2 users, besides the dev team) and aiming at the idiots of the world.

I just want the damn box to work right !!
Plus going to SuSE will render most of my Loki titles workign again ;D

Some. Heretic 2, Kohan, and Quake 3 are not working right. The first 2, at all, and Q3 the last patch makes it unplayable (no way to control the game, joypad/key/mouse all die). Apparently from the last few guys lurking on the newsgroups, RHL9+ will be incompatible with the code from loki. Perhaps its an oversight of just needing to rebuild the kernel...

As for recompiling -- I am running into a stonewall. I keep getting to an error like this :

    Code:
    make[3]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.21/drivers/char'

    Any ideas?

I had the exact same problem with RH9, and ended up going back to RH8. I almost want to say it has to do with RH9's glibc.

hmmmm. Just stock kernels? Or both RH supplied and stock?

    Re:WineX performance issues

i just used the stock kernel - my config is here

    my config

there is only one thing i needed to do with this kernel that i did not need with the others, and that is when i installed lmsensors i needed to copy the header files to /usr/include/linux/ - which of course had been linked to /usr/src/linux/include/linux .

but i had no issues making the kernel

    Re:WineX performance issues

    Thanks Paul!

I am at my friends house right now, so when I get home I will diff the two files and see what the hell I screwed up. Now I know how trickster felt ... ;D

If there is any useful info I find out I will post my .. current, and broken config .. and the diff section that mattered. I will presume it was just me screwing it all up on my own.
