You can turn the finger service off in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 and rc.inet2. (I think those are the names. I will check when i get home.) Just comment out the services you are not using.
I just got cable net access, whoopie ;D and now need to install a firewall on it. Before I was using dialup, I didn't worry much about it but now I need help/links on setting one up. A good easy one to setup would be nice.
I'm using Slackware 9.0 and Debian Sid, but want to get Slackware setup first. I used Netconfig to setup the cable modem and get online.
Then I went to Shields Up (http://grc.com) website to see what ports are open and the only one's showing open are ftp, finger and ident, everything else looks okay.
Any ideas/suggesions.
Thnx.

Try http://www.shorewall.net/
http://www.webmin.com provides an easy to use browser-based interface for it.
You can turn off all those services in /etc/inetd.conf
I use Slack, and my firewall script of choice is gShield (http://muse.linuxmafia.org)
Thnx for the replies, even if www.grc.com shields up show closed ports, I still don't have a firewall installed by default?
I'll try one of them that's mention here.
No, Slackware doesn't bring one by default.
