As for the nVidia drivers I wouldtry the mandrake RPMs (I am sure there are some out these, just look around nVidias site) and for your sound, buy a soundblaster live for 20 and save yourself alot of headaches![]()
I just installed Mandrake 10.0 community, and everything is working fine, except the sound. While the sound is good, it is really low. I have increased the volumes with KMix, and used alsamixer, but it is still way too soft. I have a VIA AC97 V8235 sound chip. What do I need to do to turn it up? (Please note that I have cranked the volume on my reciever and it is still too low). Also, does anyone know how to install the Linux Unified Drivers for Nvidia on Mandrake 10 community? I have the latest version, but it refuses to install.

Try moving the 'VIA DXS' settings up using kmix. This is what I had to do when I had the same problem with alsa drivers. I don't know what it does but it worked for me.

What type of error are you getting when you try to install the nVidia drivers? I have no idea about the sound, sorry. I do know that when I installed MDK10 the volume was muted by default.
Here is a link to an nvidia solution for Mdk 10.1 CE:

Are there issues with MDK 10.1 and nVidia cards? I just downloaded the CE and I am thinking about installing it this week on my main machine. I read you fix, thanks for writing that up, I will most definitely use it if I have a problem.
It seems from the write up that there are for the compile - wouldn't know personally as I don't have an nvidia card.Originally Posted by jro
Not my write up - just found it.

THe main problem I get is that the driver says that it can't find a kernel image that it recognises and it asks me if it wants to download a kernel off the net. THat would be nice, but I don't want to even try to compile my own kernel, and downloading a kernel with dial-up is a bitch. Does the 10.1 CE solution work with the 10.0 CE edition? I found that changing the driver from a VIA32xxx driver to the VIA32cxxx driver has rectified the sound issues concerning the volume. However, there are more problems. Now, whenever I try to play any sounds at all under KDE 3.2, with XMMS Noatun, it makes no sound, then crashes the program. The program doesn't give any details to the crash, it just crashes. I have changed the output settings with XMMS and every driver crashes, or makes no volume at all. However, if I use gnome, the sound works! I want to use programs such as Noatun, and KDE, but I can't because it keeps crashing. For some stupid reason, every KDE 3.2 distro I have tried, I have had issues concerning the sound. I have a VIA AC97 card, that should be as common as a headache!!!

I vaguely remember having some kind of similar sound problem - and I'm not sure but I think it had something to do with the kde sound settings accessed through kcontrol. There was an option for "full duplex" which I had to unselect and then the sound worked. I also know that xmms will crash if you choose the wrong output plugin. (Options => Prefences => Ouput Plugin) As far as the nvidia download - I seem to recall that it wasn't very big.

I am not sure about the sound problems beez, sorry. But as for the nVidia driver install, you don't have to compile a new kernel, just a kernel interface. The drive runs as a kernel module, so it [the module] needs to be compiled against the kernel you are currently running. It is all quite seamless, you don't actually have to do anything, other than just click yes when the installer asks you to. I have run into a problem installing the 6111 driver where the compile of the kernel module fails for some odd reason. 6106 compiled and installed no problems, I will have to try the fix on OilyFish's site and see if that fixes the issue.
