i did that a month or so ago myself, from a k6 400 to a athlon 1200 - not even a hick up!
Hi,
I had a pc running RH7.2 on an intel mobo and pentium III.
I took the hard drive out to replace a failing HD in my other computer that has a microstar mobo athlon thunderbird 1.2Ghz cpu. I booted it up expecting it to freak as it found out that all the former hardware was replaced with new HW but, I was prompted to remove all missing hardware and configure all new hardware. after all that it booted X and seemed normal. I was impressed. I remember trying a similar thing with win2k only to have it blue screen.
Score one for linux.
