    CD issues

Whenever I try to mount a CD my computer just locks up and I have to do a hard reboot. Now it sounds like a problem with the CD drive, but the thing is that I can boot off the drive, and I managed to install slack easy enough. I don't know if there is something in the kernel that I'm missing, but whenever the CD drive is accessed the PC crashes. Even if I just try to play a music CD. Anyone know what could be causing this?

Its an IDE Cyberdrive CD/RW. The only related module is ide-scsi. I'm using kernel 2.4.20, but I had the same problem with 2.4.21-rc2-ac3. I was having this problem along with a few others so I did the reinstall, and now this is the only problem I've got. Using slack 9 btw as well. Anyone have any idea at all?

Well I upgraded to 2.4.21 and the problem is gone, although I did change a few options so who knows what caused it.

    Re:CD issues

Well it actually looks like it hasn't fixed it. I flashed my bios before I upgraded the kernel so it could have had something to do with that. But rather than just locking up instantly it now locks up shortly after I start to use it, and the caps lock and scroll lock lights flash, so I'm confused

hmm, doesnt that flashing keyboard lights mean kernel panics? I forget...

Either way you got some issues. Try this ... as geeks we know other geeks. Find a fellow geek and have him/her bring over a spare drive if need be. That or a six pack. Try a new cd unit and see if the unit locks up. Try changing the master slave settings and primary/secondary/ternary channels also. I am sure that there is a bad hardware unit or incompatible unit somewhere.
