Wacky mouse problem

I am using a Microsoft optical intellimouse on a RH 8.0 system. I boot my machine up and when it reaches the X login screen my mouse goes nuts!

When I try and move it the pointer goes all over the screen and starts clicking, right clicking and eventually ends up in the lower left hand corner. The thing I don't get is when I restart X ( ctrl - alt - backspace ) it works fine. I came across this once before but I can't remember how I fixed it.

any help is appreciated.

check your /etc/X11/XF86Config file and verify that your mouse protocol is "IMPS2" or something like that.

Sounds like it's doing what happens when the wrong mouse protocol is selected. Try using "ExplorerPS/2". I also have a M$ optical IntelliMouse, and here's my mouse section of XF86Config:

Section "InputDevice"

# Identifier and driver

    Identifier  "Mouse1"
    Driver      "mouse"
    Option "Protocol"    "ExplorerPS/2"
    Option "Device"      "/dev/mouse"
    Option "Buttons" "7"

I'd say try Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2" (check the capitalization.)

do you have two mice? I believe that you should only need a single mouse section in the config, try commenting out one of them and see what happens.

Actually I questioned that too. I did a little research and found that it had something to do with USB mouse support. I don't remember exactly what it is for right now but I think I found the problem. I think it is my switch box. Today I turned on my pc but I was "switched" to another computer. After it completely booted up I switched over and it was working fine......

ahh, usb....I never managed to get mine set up propperly with usb (didn't try much either, but that's not the point). I just whipped on the ps/2 adapter and all went well.
