    Question about NVIDIA display drivers.

I downloaded the new Linux graphic driver.
I typed in the terminal " sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4363.run
What I got was a error message that said" must be run as root"
So I signed in as root and did the same thing then it said "you appear to be running an x server Please exit before installing"
    What should I do?
    Thanks 8)

You have to kill X, or log out of it. Basically, you can't have XWindows running while installing the Nvidia drivers.

    Update:

    Thanks, Schotty

he meant to write that you cant be in X while running it and must log out, and do it from a console.

How do I get out of x?
    (Sorry for the dumb question)
Sometimes I feel so lost, but someday hope I will get all this.

    Re:Question about NVIDIA display drivers.

    What distribution are you using?

Usually, is not very hard. From within Xwindows, press ctrl+alt+f2. That will drop you to a console. Then type ps -A. You will get some results similar to this:
    bash-2.05b$ ps -A
    PID TTY TIME CMD
    1 ? 00:00:04 init
    2 ? 00:00:00 keventd
    3 ? 00:00:00 ksoftirqd_CPU0
    4 ? 00:00:00 kswapd
    5 ? 00:00:00 kiswapd
    6 ? 00:00:00 bdflush
    7 ? 00:00:00 kupdated
    8 ? 00:00:00 pagebufd
    9 ? 00:00:00 xfslogd/0
    10 ? 00:00:00 xfsdatad/0
    11 ? 00:00:00 kjournald
    35 ? 00:00:00 kapmd
    72 ? 00:00:00 dhcpcd
    120 ? 00:00:00 khubd
    788 ? 00:00:00 lpd
    791 ? 00:00:00 crond
    793 ? 00:00:00 atd
    796 ? 00:00:00 sendmail
    799 ? 00:00:00 sendmail
    803 ? 00:00:00 apmd
    805 ? 00:00:00 gpm
    807 tty1 00:00:00 bash
    808 tty2 00:00:00 agetty
    809 tty3 00:00:00 agetty
    810 tty4 00:00:00 agetty
    811 tty5 00:00:00 agetty
    812 tty6 00:00:00 agetty
    824 tty1 00:00:00 startx
    836 tty1 00:00:00 xinit
    837 ? 00:00:12 X
    842 tty1 00:00:00 xinitrc
    843 tty1 00:00:00 startkde
    861 ? 00:00:00 kdeinit
    864 ? 00:00:00 kdeinit
    867 ? 00:00:00 kdeinit

Find the process number under which X is running (will be a different one in your system.) and kill it. For example, with th list I got, I would do kill 837.

However, if your system boots up directly into XWindows (which I think is what is happening in your case) you will have to make it boot up to the console instead, because as soon as you kill X, it will respawn it. If this is the case, you can check this.
That will make linux boot up to the console, and then you can install the Nvidia driver from it.

ctrl + alt + backspace if you have gdm or kdm it will throw you back to x. So if you might have to kill kdm or gdm then kill x

    Re:Question about NVIDIA display drivers.

    much easier way ---

Open a terminal up. Su to root or run in sudo the following command :

    init 3

That will stop whatever login manager is running (like XDM, KDM, GDM). Then after you get dropped to the normal terminal you can run the setup tool.
