    Hyper-Threading in Linux?

Do I need anything special for HyperThread? Im gettin a new 2.4ghz , 800mhz FSB, with hyper-threading :-D PC3200 RAM, DDR400. 120gb 8mb cache HDD. Im so excited!!!!

Ok back to the topic, is there any issues with hyper-threading in linux? Does it support it? Or will it show up as just 1 cpu? Thanks

2.4 GHz with SMT... I haven't heard of those... last I looked only 3.066GHz and above had SMT activated, unless it's a xeon.

Anyways, if you use a kernel with the O(1) scheduler you should already be set to go, I would run a development kernel on that baby since Mingo has been doing a lot of work on these types of setups (He has a 2 way SMP + SMT xeon setup for test at RedHat for this btw.).

But in the development kernels the O(1) scheduler should be 100% HT aware.

but the cpu should run under any kernel.. just remember to compile an SMP kernel, it's multiprocessoring afterall.

Yea when Intel released the 800mhz FSB, they released it in 2.4, 2.6 , 2.8 and 3.0 all with Hyper Thread technology. I had to buy 800mhz FSB and DDR400 immediately, it was too fast!!!! Plus the board has like 8 USB2.0 ports and Serial ATA 150! Nice shit

    damn sweet!

Anyhow to answer your Q, in both BSD and linux, you just need to enable it in the kernel, and if it is present the kernel will enable it. Real tough eh? ;D Last kernel I built had the option there. Then again that was a bit back ... 2.4.5 ?

    Re:Hyper-Threading in Linux?

Well I got my box all hooked up!

Installed Drake 9.1 on that badboy, but I dont seem to have the hyper-thread dual cpu deal going on in linux. I would imagine
"cat /proc/cpuinfo" would show CPU 0 and CPU 1 right? Am I supposed to enable ACPI somewhere? Im only getting 1 CPU in there.....

Also only other linux prob was my onboard Intel chip. sndconfig reads it fine, says we found a Intel 80xxx AC97 Chip, but then says sorry its not supported Anyway around this? Its a Intel D865PE chipset .

But god damn a 800FSB is fast! My penis got hard when I rebooted in like 10 seconds, lol

Would other OS's see it as two procs as well? (BSD, Winderz ?)

    Re:Hyper-Threading in Linux?

Did you enabled SMP on your kernel config?

    Re:Hyper-Threading in Linux?

Yea WinXP sees it as 2 cpus. "Task Manager" has 2 cpu charts, device manager lists it as a "ACPI Multiprocessor System", dxdiag, etc.

As far as makin it multi-processor , I dont think I did. I didnt see any place during drake install that mentioned Dual Cpus or Hyper Thread at all. Should I have enabled ACPI? I wasnt sure since its a virtual CPU not an actual Dual ya know? Thanks

    Re:Hyper-Threading in Linux?

I am just guessing here, since I am not familiar with this. However, you might want to give a try compiling your kernel and enabling SMP support. Even if it is not necessary, your kernel will run with no slowdown (according to the SMP help in the kernel configuration.)

This person seems to be trying to do what you want. It seems he got it.

Also, I found some links. I don't know if you have seen them, but they might be interesting.
