    Re:modprobe: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/misc/au8830.o failed

    depmod -a took a while to complete, but reported no errors. Nevertheless, it didn't work.

    I see devfs loading while booting up, and see it in the logs. What does it mean if I don't see /dev/dsp?

    In terms of actually installing the module, I went ahead and retried it, and got the following:

    # insmod -f au8830

    Using /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/misc/au8830.o

    Hint: You are trying to load a module without a GPL compatible license
    and it has unresolved symbols. Contact the module supplier for
    assistance, only they can help you.

    I had read about hexediting the au8830.o file and changing the gcc2 part to gcc3 (it worked for someone).

    I reran it, and *didn't* get the error about the gcc2 vs gcc3, but did get the remaining notices about unresolved symbols.

    Still no /dev/dsp (there there's dvd, discs, and disc0 and disc1).

    try modprobe au8839 rather than insmod.

    Hmmmm I tried #modprobe au8830 and received no errors.

    However, I tried to run Noatun to play some mp3s and got an alert reporting:
    Code:
    Sound server fatal error:

    AudioSubSystem::handleIO: write failed

    len = -1, can_write = 4096, errno = 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable)

    This might be a sound hardware/driver specific probme (see aRts FAQ)
    Whoa!! I just decided to try another app (KsCD) and tried it. I got the voice of Martin Luther King (no fooling - a cd of speeches I picked up a while back - amazing).

    So, A L R I G H T ! !

    Thanks a bunch a man. I wonder why it craps out when I try to play mp3s.

    I just tried it again, and found that it worked - but only if I didn't write or do any other activity. My machine is old (PII 450 MHz, 384 mb ram), but generally ran mandrake 8.2 (kernel 2.4) well enough. So, I can multitask when I play CDs, but not mp3s (though those are on a fat32 partition - but again, used to play okay).

    Any ideas? Where else should I look for clues?
