are you using DHCP? try this -open a terminal ( e.g. xterm, konsole, gnome-terminal) and type /sbin/ifconfig - if eth0 comes up then it should at least be configured - here is what i get.

in a terminal type su - then type ifup eth0 - then let us know what it said.
