Can't you bring it up in single user mode like UNIX. Then change it?
how about.... a rootdisk?
hello ras,
bring it up in runlevel one - check out the bottom opf the GRUB pet on how to do this, and boot like garskoci said.
I reloaded and followed the pet to dual boot to XP.
I did the dd if=/dev/hda5 of=mnt/floppy/bootsect.lin bs=1 count=512
Edited the boot.ini and added the line
The boot menu showed up and linux was a choice. I selected it and it just sat there with a black screen and a cursor at the top.
First guess is my /dev/hda5 is not the right one any other suggestions?

Start to re-install from the cd. Go to the where it re-writes grup or lilo and try that. If not, boot off of the cd again and go to rescue mode. Once you are in there, find the mkbootdsk command (I think its in /etc) and create you a bootdisk.
load linux using (grub or lilo)
linux single (Linux here is your kernel name, vmlinuz seems popular with vendors for some reason)
to get into Linux single user mode, and then you can change your password or remove it completely.
