I tried the forms and getting glibc back isn't my problem now it's back. Now I get an error with ./configure scrips not being able to find gcc. >

Hah! It might be a path issue. I rebooted to make sure that I'm remembering things correctly. As user when I try just about any command I get <command> not found, however as root it works eg whereis. When I use startx however I get xinit /lib/libc.so.6: version 'GLIBC_2.3' not found (required by xprogram) for about 20 lines.

I think this might be salvagable.
