bringing eth0 up and down

hey
at a past lan party i attended the router was constantly getting attacked by viruses on the windows users machines and we had to constantly reboot the router. So to renew my ip i used
"ifconfig eth0 down" and then used "ifconfig eth0 up" to renew but when i went to access the internet or logon to to aim it wouldnt connect. Am i using the right command? Or do i just need to reboot to renew?

No, that is not the right command. The interface going up or down in unrelated to dhcp.

try

/sbin/dhcpcd -n -H eth0
