Laptop friendly version of Linux?

All my current plan is to dual boot my new Dell laptop so that when I am stuck in some foreign country I have linux to keep me company. I have a 30 gig HDD and WinXp Homer on it currently. I want to give XP 25 gigs and keep 5 gigs for Linux. Since RH8.0 full install took over 3 gigs it does not seem very laptop friendly.

Any recommendations (without a lot of hard work (slack, deb)) I want a gui Linux that I can just futz around on. Nothing more no servers etc.

Actually, RedHat has been running very well on my laptop for a couple years now. Pcmcia,touchpad and all the other goofy laptop hardware works.

Awhile back I had Red Hat 8.0.9 running on my older sisters Dell Laptop. The thing about Dell laptops is that some use the i810 video chip which is not supported by older XServers ( at least not without some tweaking ). I suppose that any of the newer distros should work just fine granted that they include XF86 4.1.0 or higher. Good luck

Also try some of the lighter Window Managers( fluxbox, waimea, etc..).

Any major distro really.

I'd try RedHat too! I've been running RH on my Stinkpad for 4 years or so.

Sorry that should read XF86 4.3.0.
