    red Hat version (remotely)

    that's a stupid question....
I want to be able to figure out RH version when I ssh to the box remotely. It doesn't show me the regular prompt stating the version.
When I do cat /proc/version it gives me
Linux version 2.4.7-10 (bhcompile@stripples.devel.redhat.com) (gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.1 2.96-98))...it says version is 7.1.2 (which I can interpret as 7.1)
But I know in fact it is version 7.2.
When I use up2date it recognizes it as 7.2.
So if I can't erly on teh accuracy of cat /proc/version then how can I figure out the version using remote conenction?
    Thank you.

I think redhat-release in /etc/ gives that info. I havn't used RH in a while so I could be totally wrong ...

All that says to me is that it is a beta 7.2 release (x.y.9z is beta numbering). Still it suprises me that it actually comes up as 7.2 in the stuff... I cant see RH having a bug like that in the code (messing up like that ...)

    Thanks folks,
redhat-release and issue give the needed information.
It looks like /proc/version is not a place to look....:-)
