Updating KDE - Help me please.

Hi,

I'm quite a newbie in Linux, and I would like to know the method on "How to update KDE" (update from KDE 3.0 to KDE 3.1). Usually, everybody says something like "If you're a newbie ... don't do it!!", but I don't want to be a newbie all the time, so: please, can somebody help me???

Kinda depends on the distro. If you use an RPM based distro, put all of the new update rpms in a folder, cd to that folder, then go to su mode and issue the command:

rpm -Uvh --force --nodeps *.rpm

Be sure to do this in console mode.

This works well on SuSE. I can't swear to others.

On Debian, I suppose apt would do the job very well, but I leave that advice to the Debbies...

well, ther best method I can come up with is check their site. If that doesnt have it, see if someone has an apt-rpm source for it. RedHat has one and supposedly works well. Cant confirm. I am gonna hold till RH8.1 personally or if I ever can make FreeBSD work, I will use ports.

But anytime you use --force or --nodeps, you are asking for trouble. You are essentially turning off one of the safety features and forcing the rpms into the system, safe or not.

Apt-rpm should work okay. Alot of RedHat guys are using some source (I will find out for ya) and using apt-rpm and synaptic to update it.

Ok, thanks a lot !
But, will it work correctly with Linux Mandrake 9.0 if I use those RedHat rpms??Don't I risk to screw up my KDE by installing this "RedHat Version of KDE" (I ask that because I read this on Mosfet's website)???
So, what you say is: I download the rpms from the first link, then I install the program that is at the second link and then with that program I install the rpms of the first link???
... Now I juste need to reinstall my Linux Mandrake 9.0 because I formated a few days ago, and I'm still under Win .
If I make any kind of mistake while trying to update KDE 3.0 to KDE 3.1, and if I use Linux and Win on the same PC trough Lilo, do you think I could get big problems, like not being able to access Win again??
