hehe... my fonts are better, and I'm on 4.2.1 - I hack my own sources, like a true geek.

plus I use the vera fonts, on Gnome 2.2 -- yay, that can be really pretty if you put some effort into it.

now why would i want to put time into something that really does not concern me ?

Might we see a picture to back this up? I haven't tried the vera fonts yet. If I deem them worthy then maybe that'll be a nice little evening project.

And what exactly do you do to the sources? I've seen some of your shots before and I must say your font rendering is above reproach.

    Re:xfree86 4.3.0 released

The fonts are avail. as a beta via the gnome website, and they are BEAUTIFUL..

The rendering I would rather not tell you right now, here's why:

Freetype gets statically build with X11 for some reason, and the trick is to replace that with the lastest and greatest freetype (in my case 2.1.4rc2) and then have a compiled library on the side for everything that doesn't rely on the static one in X (which is the main reason why fonts look so bad)

Another thing is that this can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to make work - since X is a bit strange to make compile with something none native.

Then I use all sorts of hacks untill I feel I have the best possible match for my screen.

Currently I have freetype 2.1.4rc2 + xft2 + Bitstream Vera fonts and Gnome 2.2 - and I'm looking into disabling font hinting and replacing it with something else, maybe the xft hack...

Now I really wish that X would stop bundling freetype, that would make font work a lot easier.

I would like to turn them off if I could.

you can't? I sense a disturbance in the force...

As I understand, you have to replace the iconset, this feature SHOULD not be enabled per default - alpha blending is UGLY in most places, and very hard on the idea at times (plus user-non-friendly implementations are all I've seen - execpt on panels)

    Just edit your /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.theme to:
    Code:
    [Icon Theme]
    Inherits=core
4.3 comes with the whiteglass, redglass, handhelds, and the standard 'core' set.
