Thread: 2 cd drives

    2 cd drives

What is the best and easiest way to add a second cd drive in Slackware? I've searched using google and have read through the how-to's at TLDP. I found alot of good information, but have yet to get Slackware to see the 2nd cd drive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Throw it in, find out the device name (/dev/hdx) and add it to /etc/fstab with a mount point.

I don't know much about Slackware, but can give you generic guidelines:

First, where is the second CDROM connected to?
    Primary master - hda
    Primary slave - hdb
    Secondary master -hdc
    Secondary slave -hdd

Add a line to your /etc/fstab file:

    /dev/hdx0 /cdrom1 iso9660 defaults,user,noauto,ro 0 0

Replace hdx with the drive letter from the above list.

If you don't have the /cdrom1 folder, you need to create it first: mkdir /cdrom1

Then put a CD in your second CDROM, issue: mount /cdrom1 and you will be able to see the CD in the /cdrom1 folder.

Of course, you have to do all the above as root.

    Re:2 cd drives

I get this error when I try and mount /cdrom1

    bash-2.05a# mount /cdrom1
    mount: can't find /cdrom1 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
I did enter it in /etc/fstab and did mkdir /cdrom1. How would I go about making a mount point for it or is that what mkdir /cdrom1 was?

Your error message says it: it can't find it in /etc/fstab
Post the contents of your /etc/fstab file, then we can figure out what's going on.
Yes, you've made the mountpoint with mkdir /cdrom1.

    here it is:
    /dev/hda3 swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/hda2 / ext3 defaults 1 1
    /dev/hda1 /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
    /dev/hda4 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
    /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,users,ro 0 0
    /dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom1 iso9660 noauto,users,ro 0 0
    /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,users 0 0
    none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
    none /proc proc defaults 0 0

    Re:2 cd drives

You have it set up at /mnt/cdrom1. It is okay, but in that case: mkdir /mnt/cdrom1 (you have to do this only once), then: mount /mnt/cdrom1

Obviously, you will find your cdrom files int /mnt/cdrom1.

    ooh, yeah! Nice catch!

I font think Slack inplemented a Kudzu-ish hardware detection tool now did they? Kudzu hadles that for RedHat and Mandrake.

    Is it 'ln -s /mnt/cdrom1 /dev/hdd' or 'ls /mnt/cdrom1 /dev/hdd'?
