*ALL* of my maiden cds work great in my DVD drive.

even the new re-released Live After Death - which is what the 1st live after death CD should have been.

See, the drive kicks ass for everything except audio cd's. For DIVX, VCD, DVD, PCD -- its great. Audio -- sucks. Most cds dont work. The new satch cd doesnt work. Nor does any of my disturbed. The rev horton heat one does, though. No metallica.

    Weird eh?

Maybe it just has different taste in music.

It has been at least 12 hours since C++PHREAK has had music. This could get ugly.
As I understand it, the CDROM worked fine until a new network card was installed. After installation, the CDROM will not play an audio CD, and you cannot mount a data CD.
You checked that the CDROM cable was still securely connected at both ends. It must have power for the tray to work. If the audio cable were loose or something (you may not have one), it would still not affect your ability to mount a data CD.
Does the newly installed network card function correctly?
You might look in /proc/interrupts and make sure that there is no conflict there.
If the problem is already fixed, what did you find?

The network card I had in didnt work, so I put in one I know works, but the cdrom still isnt picking anything up. I do remember tho, when I was installing something from a cd, it froze and I simply shut it off. Could that have any affect on it at all? Maybe I will take the network card out and try again...

btw, shouldnt this be in hardware?

The fact that it froze up while in use may indicate that it has a problem. You did not cause the problem by shutting it off.
My suggestion would be to remove the network card, and try to get back to the configuration you had when it was working. That should tell you whether or not the card had anything to do with it.
Next time you boot up, look in BIOS and check the state of Plug and Play. I keep reading that it should be disabled, and since your problem showed up after you installed the network card, I guess this might have some affect.
I am also way in over my head here.

Re:cdrom not picking up music cd or burnt cd

I took the network card out, and tried to boot from the SuSE cd, and it said
    Boot from ATAPI CDROM: Failed
so I rebooted and disabled PnP, and I still got the sam error :-[ Does anyone have an old IDE cdrom lying around?

Dude, you can't mount an audio CD. It has no filesystem. Just login as root and launch like noatun or kscd.
