Vi Editor Help
Okay, i'm trying to install Crux 1.0 and need to edit some config files, it's default editor is Vi...ewww...which I do not like at all.
The problem I'm having is when I start it and try to save the file, I always get error message that the file is in Read-Only mode. How do I turn on Write Mode?
I've tried saving the files using :qw and the other save commands and it keeps saying its in R-O mode. And I am doing this as Root user.
Thnx.

Re:Vi Editor Help
Hi,
A couple of thoughts... As root can you do a chmod on the file to give root _rw permissions? Also, have you tried the :w! instead of :wq?
Just thoughts...

Re:Vi Editor Help
I would have to look at the file to see if permission can be changed, but it shouldn't have to since the docs state to modify the config files before you do a final reboot.
I believe I tried every way to save files using Vi, ewww, that I could think of, but will try it again. I will reinstall Crux anyway, maybe something got messed up.
Thnx.

Re:Vi Editor Help
hello,
when saving do a w! and it will save anyway - you must be owner of the file or root to do this.
edit:

Re:Vi Editor Help
well providing you setup sudo, you could just do a :
sudo vim name_of_file
and you shall have zero issues editing and saving
I for insert (type in shit or delete it)
[esc]:wq to quit (escape key, then colon, w, q)

Re:Vi Editor Help
awww come on, vi aint THAT bad now :'(
By the way, Barnes and Nobles has these little reference books for cheap. Pick one up on vi and emacs. You will need it one day. vim makes vi look like the bastard son of evil for someonme who has never used plain ole vi. And as a former admin, its nice to have a clue as to what you are getting into ;D I cant comprehend emacs all that well. I needed that thingie.
Since I am not at home right now, I cant check the ISBN codes, but IIRC its an oreilly reference handbook. Around 12 bucks each.

vi and emacs in one book? ;D
Wouldn't that cause a black hole upon contact?
lol @ vim. I thought vi was great, but once you start picking up vim-only commands, its worse than learning latin - it sure is a spiffy way of getting around though. Go Vi(m)!
vi is a microcosm of the Unix world. Don't expect
to learn all of it at once; perhaps you shouldn't expect
to learn all of it at all. -- Jon Lasser

Re:Vi Editor Help
Thnx guys/gals...I'll have to try those commands sometime between Wed-Fri. when I'm off work.
All of this editing is going on during installation so most commands are limited.
One reason you may see me post messages late is that I work 3rd shift hours! :-[
