The Linux Difference

Ever had to use Windows, and told yourself, "I wish that I could do this like I would on Linux"? What do you think Linux has that Windows doesn't?

This Is What I like:

1.) The feeling that the desktop is yours, your personal working space, not the place where you have to work around.

2.) I love in Linux when you triple click a line of text, it selects the whole line. Simple, but timesaving.

3.) APT. Should I say any more?

4.) Mozilla just feels so much better under Linux.

5.) The people that use Linux are nicer.

6.) OpenOffice 1.1, AbiWord, KDE, Quanta Plus 3.2!

7.) The feeling of accomplishment when you first compile your first program. Damn that was an amazing feeling. My first program that I compiled was WINE 2002xxxx.

8.) The Linux desktop just looks so much better!

9.) The fact that I have never had a BSOD on Linux.

10.) I got Linux to work on a damaged piece of hardware that Windows just refused to run on. It had a faulty Mobo, bad ram, and errors on the hard drive!

11.) If you want to use the console, you can. If you want to use the GUI, you can!

12.) That sound that Windows XP plays when it starts up and shuts down sounds good only once. How many people can complain with that high fidelity ogg sound that Knoppix plays when it starts up?

13.) Microsoft has nothing to do with it, so screw the monopolising companies.

I concur with yours. I'd add:

1. Copy, cut + paste, and delete operations just _work_ rather than using 100% of the CPU and memory and choking up the system.

2. On my older hardware I can burn a CD, rip another CD, listen to mp3s, and browse the net in realtime. Try that on *any* windows workstation, no matter how beefy the hardware.

3. Almost virus immune.

4. The same OS can effortlessly be configured to be a hardcore firewall / IP-masquerade server / FTP server / SSH server / etc. as can be run as a normal workstation.

Yeah! Does anyone else love linux for any reason? I have just found another reason:

1.) Is it just me, or does the internet run faster with Linux? Cause that is what it feels like.

I <u>LOVE</u> being on the bleeding edge of technology, with linux, I can run all kinds of new things that windows users just dont get. How do you enable ipv6 in windows???

Open Source.

When I want to write a new peice of software, or solve a new problem, I don't have to start from scratch. I can, but I'm not forced to.

For that matter, you can change anything. you're not locked in, and trying out someone else's software solution doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. If you don't find a solution you like, take the one that's closest,and make it work your way. Then release it for others to discover and use.

I am with ZennouRyuu on this one. I love it because I am using technology that is actively updated to use the newest technology available. I don't have to pay for new features (usually) or bug fixes (I just love it in some Win programs that since their program are so buggy to start with they'll squash all the bugs then give it the next major virsion number and make everyone pay for it all over again.)

1) I love the fact that I don't have to browse a gazillion websites that require cyrillic font support if I want some piece of software for free :wink:

2) I love the ideals of OSS.

3) I don't have to pay for unsecure, outdated, unstable and unflexible software.

4) My system never crashes on me unless I go and do something _really_ dumb ops:

5) I can irc, listen to mp3s, browse the net, run bittorrent _and_ burn cds at the same time w/o worrying about getting corrupt cds.

I don't mind ppl running MS software, I just feel sorry for them.
