how to find out what system you are on?

    Hi,

Suppose you got a shell account on a machine but, didn't know what type of *nix system it was. how could you figure this out? what kernel is it running? which distro/version, etc

    Thanx,

Usually a 'uname -a' should provide enough info. Assuming you know your kernels, and that the machine is not running custom kernels. :P
