RH8 & GNOME CD Player

Yep, another newbie.
I've just installed Red Hat 8. Everything went well. Everything was detected. Printer works, internet connection, e-mail and even my digital camera is seen by RH. Everything is great so far except the GNOME CD Player. No sound. All the other sounds are there. It just wont play music. I've checked the volume for ther CD player and it's on (not muted) and all the way up.
I'm at a loss. Is this a bug. Can I somehow reinstall the CD player?

hmmm, try this to see what we need to do.

Just to make sure that it isnt a wierd configuration issue with gnome-cd, is try noatun (RH menu -> Extras -> Sound & Video -> Noatun). Chances are that that wont work, but if it does, we know that its a bad setting with gnome-cd.

If neither work (as expected), try doing the following commands as root:

chmod 666 /dev/dsp*
chmod 666 /dev/mixer

That allows all users (as in not just root) access to all of the sound channels. I do not recall if I needed to do this upon installing RH 8 or not. If it happened before yesterday, I pobably wont remember ;D

It shows nothing.

This didn't help either:
chmod 666 /dev/dsp*
chmod 666 /dev/mixer

When I put a CD ROM in, it auto picks up and looks like it's playing. It even displays the CD title and track titles.(which I didn't put in)
Just no sound.
What else can I do?

dumb question - is the cable installed in from the CD drive to the sound card?

;D Yes. I'm using removable hard drives. I'm going back and forth between Windows and Linux. Music CD's play in windows from the same CD drive. Good question though.

I've removed the GNOME media packages and reinstalled them just for giggles. No luck. Know one has heard of this before?

check the volume settings in BOTH gnome-cd and in the system volume settings.

Everything is up all the way. Nothing muted.

The volume slider on the front right of the Gnome player is all the way up.

I also have a 2nd cdrom(burner) in the computer. CD"s won't play from there either. All cables are hooked up. I've gotta be missing something.

Looks like I'm almost out of options.

OK, the burner has a head phone jack. I put a music CD in the burner, it auto picks up. I plug in the head phones and I hear music. I know this points to the cable not being hooked up but it is and it works in windows.
Any ideas?

Still nothing out of the computer speakers. only the head phones.

I'm not sure about options on the player, my sound card doesn't even work in RH8.0 so at least you can get sounds : , but is there an option on "how to play" CDs like digitally... I think I remember this in a Windows problem I had. The playing source was bad, or somehting like that.
