i had something like that - seems like removing ~.transgaming is what fixed it...
i installed the newest wine 2003115 and it wont let me run the game half-life. it installed fine but told me i needed to have to run higher than 16bit on the deskmod. so i changed my wine config to say this.
and i dont get an error on startup because when i opened it nothing happens, if i try from console i get.[x11drv]
; Number of colors to allocate from the system palette
"AllocSystemColors" = "100"
; Use a private color map
"PrivateColorMap" = "N"

i dont see a .transgaming, i tried to set resolutions for all the color depths in X, and now i get the error from the console...
bash-2.05a$ wine hl.exe

no ~/.transgaming/c_drive ? i assume you are doing the winex setup.exe
im not using WineX, im using just plain Wine, on slackware 8.1
ya i get the message
"Half-Life requires 16 bit color. Please change your desktop settings to HiColor. Sometimes this is called "32767 colors" or "65535 colors"
i run at 1280x1024 res with 24bit
and console gets.
bash-2.05a$ wine hl.exe

Good luck on using it with just Wine. WineX will do the job just fine though. ;D
It's worth the $$$. Trust me. Or you can always find someone to give it to you. :P
ya pretty much, the only game ive gotten running with Wine so far is Starcraft
I have gotten half-life to work in software mode with winex. Also got it to work under codeweavers wine ( all the way to the splash screen frooze after that since i dont have a video accelerator ). Try codeweaver if you have a video accelerator this comes with all sort of fancy wine setup tools and what not. Codeweaver
