Cache required by bind9 nameserver

Hey there.

I'm setting up a nameserver for a small department at our university. It serves about 100 workstations.

I want to use bind9 on debian woody and from the docs I gathered that the nameserver's cache lives in the server's RAM alone. Can anyone give me a rough estimate on how much RAM I need to be on the safe side? Or better yet if somebody runs bind serving more than just a couple of computers can you check it's memory usage after a few days of uptime.

I ran a nameserver on my local Debian Woody box and it was fine with 128mb's RAM. I was just testing it though, and I had no idea that it lives all in the RAM. For your situation, I would suggest 512mb - 1gb, but I could be wrong. That may be overkill. :-\

It depends on how you set up your name server ( whether it's caching nameserver or regular name server ). But with RAM prices so dart cheap now adays costing less than 100 bucks for 512 sticks, it wouln't be wrong to go as high as you can starting with 256 MB stick.
