    Building a package

I'm planning on making a linux distro, and i would like to be able to make a tarball of a single package, by building it so that it would work if in /usr for example, but so that it will actually be installed in another dir, like /storage. Basically i wan't the package to not work when in /storage, but be able to tar the whole contents of /storage for the package to work if untarred at /. Now i tried using "./configure --prefix=/usr" and then "make prefix=/storage" but then the library links where all gimped, so my question is, how can i make it so that this will work?

Check the docs over at www.linuxpackages.net on making Slackware packages, since that is what you describe.

But, IIRC, you do your normal ./configure --prefix=/usr (/usr/local is off limits), make --prefix=/usr, and make install --prefix=/somewhereelse .

I use Portage and ebuilds to handle that, man 5 ebuild will help you

arch linux's package building system does exactly what you describe. Each package has all of the files in the directories that they will be installed to and then they are zi[pped up in a tarball and intil you use pacman to install them they can sit whever you like.

so you may want to take a look at pacman and makepkg. it should get you going.

(oh crux has similar packaging but their package manager doesd not handle depends -- ithink)

    hope this helps.
