Hi,
I am dual booting Linux with XP using two HD's. I want to pull out the HD containg the Linux OS (Mandrake 10.0) and put it in another machine. Do I have to erase the MBR in the first drive and if so how do I do that in order for the XP to boot directly for the drive that is left. I pulled out the Linux drive and didn't do anything to the MBR and all I got was a screen full of 99's.

Yea, the 99's are because your boot loader (on the MBR) can't find the lilo stuff on the /boot partition.
If you have a windows 98 rescue disk, you can boot that to an a prompt and do an fdisk /mbr to restore the mbr to a windows mbr and it should boot XP ok.
Thanks for the info. I have reinstalled the drive I want to remove and things are working just fine. Could I pull up a command line in XP and do the fdisk /MBR, remove the Linux drive and still boot to XP? I would make an XP rescue disk before I did that. I have heard that sometimes when you do the fdisk /MBR it doesn't clear the first sector and then things won't boot properly. I have a program that will clear the first sector of the drive with XP and the /MBR on it, but I am hesitant to use it unless the fdisk /MBR doesn't work. That may work, though I recall trying it and I couldn't find fdisk (as in it doesn't come with XP and the cli in XP isn't a real dos prompt to begin with....)
Ah. That is why you asked me for a Windows 98 rescue disk. I don't have one of those, but I will find one somewhere. Thanks much.
