Anyone know a good way to check how long a modem connection (or any other network connection I guess) has been up? I suppose if I ran gppp or kppp that would do it, but I'd rather know if theres anything like a procfile that has it or something, because I'm probably going to build a cgi-page with modem stats and the option to redial if its down etc. So any ideas, shoot.
One idea would be to get your "ip-up" (poss /etc/ppp/ip-up - in a normal set up is executed when ppp link established) script to record the current time in a file somewhere (and ip-down could overwrite it with the text "down", say).
There is probably a better way. Maybe ifconfig tells you, but I'm not at a Linux box right now to test that.
thats a pretty good idea. One would think that theres simply a /proc file or something somewhere because my windoze xp does it by default. But anyways, if nothing else turns up, I think ip-up will work fine.
The net monitor in gkrellm can be configured to show the online time of a ppp network connection. I don't really know where it get's that data from. If nothing else the time the connection is established will be recorded in /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog
