Not having SP1 is not a good thing at all, unless you don't like privacy. :P
As for the registration thing, yes, it's probably the most ignorant thing M$ could have done. If you add a HDD, NIC, or upgrade CPU's, you have to re-register. Also, if you register the key more than 3 times, you have to get a new one the next time. Talk about monopolizing.
On the hardware thing. In their eyes, if you put enough new hardware in, they consider it a "new computer", and force you to buy another Win if you plan to use it after that, instead of giving you another key. Thanks Billy!!! Hope they don't find you in the San Andres Fault, you rat bastard.
Holy crap, that's crap! I didn't realize that you had to buy a new Windows if you upgraded hardware too much. You would think that if you pay for a product you should be able to use it for as long as you want, but apparently, that's not the case. >

XP Pro Corporate is actually very cheap. I can't remember what I paid for it, but it was $25 for the media and something like $60 for each installation. The only downfall to it is that you have to be enrolled in a bulk licensing program to get it at that price, meaning you can't buy just one copy. As a matter of fact, I had upgrade protection on all my 2k instrallations (which cost $29 per license for two year's coverage at the time), so I didn't pay diddly to install XP on about half the workstations in my org.
Needless to say, XP sucks and I backed out of a 50 or so installations and rolled back to 2k. The whole home-licensing/regestering thing is also a major pain in the ass, so I will never install XP at home either.

Haha... I did the very same thing. I work on an Active Directory network which is headache enough for me without all the WinXP mumbojumbo. I mean there are only so many hours in the day.

Go one step further and not use at home ever again (or until they get their head out of their asses).
There is a keygen for XP Corp.. The FCKG.... key, the one almost everyone uses will indeed stop working after upgrading to SP1, however if you created a different key it would work just fine. You can even change the key it uses without reinstalling (there's a howto somewhere on the net), but this is all very off topic (it is security related, is it not? Erm, an example of how activation is bypassable?)

First off. Sure go ahead get a key generator, yeah that will work. Don't forget that Windows is such a stable OS, and it doesn't have any flaws so those updates you won't be able to get anymore won't make a difference at all. You can always get a copy with a SP with it, but don't forget, it's not going to have those updates for the .NET framework, all the security issue updates, the hardware updates for your hardware, and the critical updates. Stealing this OS has it's disadvantages, these just being a few.
Another being that $500,000USD + 20 years in prison over a POS OS is not worth it.
