    USB CDRW

    HI

I am trying to attach a usb cdrw (Iomega Predator) to my machine running Mandrake 9.0. I have just upgraded to 9.0 thinking it would make life easier.
I can't seem to find any way in which (after several reboots) the cdrw has been detected - except that the cd in it spins occasionally. I have searched the web for ideas without success. Isn't mandrake supposed to detect attached hardware and configure?

When I do lsmod, I get

    hello,
merry christmas and welcome to ljr - the usb cdwriter uses scsi emulation, open any terminal as user root and type cdrecord -scanbus this should tell you if it is being setup properly - if it works it should look something like this:

    Code:
    [root@bugs root]# cdrecord -scanbus
    Cdrecord 1.10 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jrg Schilling
    Linux sg driver version: 3.1.24
    Using libscg version 'schily-0.5'

    Re:USB CDRW

    HI

Merry Christmas to you too! It's almost over down here in Australia.
    Thanks for the reply.

I tried cdrecord -scanbus and got this:

    Cdrecord 1.11a32 (i586-mandrake-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling
    Linux sg driver version: 3.1.24
    Using libscg version 'schily-0.6'
    scsibus0:
    0,0,0 0) *
    0,1,0 1) *
    0,2,0 2) *
    0,3,0 3) 'IOMEGA ' 'ZIP 100 ' '14.A' Removable Disk
    0,4,0 4) *
    0,5,0 5) *
    0,6,0 6) *
    0,7,0 7) *

which seems to indicate that the cdrw is not being detected. I have a zip drive as well.

    I'd appreciate any ideas.

    Thanks

    Re:USB CDRW

humm - just for giggles lets put a CD in the drive.
Then lets do the following in a terminal:
    depmod -a
    then do a rmmod usb-storage
    followed by a modprobe usb-storage
    then retry the cdrecord -scanbus

if this fails please post the output of ls -l /dev/ | grep sg and ls -l /dev/ | grep sd

    HI

I did as you suggested and the response to cdrecord -scanbus
    was:

    cdrecord -scanbus
    Cdrecord 1.11a32 (i586-mandrake-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg Schilling
cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are root.

    ls -l /dev/ | grep sg

    gave no response

    ls -l /dev/ | grep sd
    gave

    lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 7 Dec 27 22:41 ptysd -> pty/m61
    drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 Dec 27 22:42 sd/
    lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 33 Dec 27 22:43 sda -> scsi/host0/bus0/target3/lun0/disc
    crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 3, 61 Dec 27 22:41 ttysd

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hi

I am still stuck on this problem - the results of doing the above have already been posted.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks

    Re:USB CDRW

I don't know if this helps but when I connected my usb cradle pda I had to link the usb port to the cradle I.E....
    as root do..

ln -s /dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/pilot (this is for the pda cd dev would be dif name)

then change owner and permissions to the user

It is just an idea sorry if it is clueless.

    good luck
