hi trickster,
Merry Christmas buddy!
okay - onto kernel stuff - redhat keeps its configs in /boot/ - the file is named config-2.4.18-14 for the default one. are there any other errors like gcc or make missing?
I have never been able to recompile my kernel in RH. Everytime I do, I get a lot of errors; missing files, etc. Even if I use the same configuration I use on the same box for Slackware, I always get a lot of things missing, inluding missing the mouse (?) and after it runs all those checks, I never get to a CLI. It just hangs on "INIT : Id 6 respawning too fast:disabled for 5 minutes" "INIT : Id 5 respawning too fast:disabled for 5 minutes" and so on.
Does anyone has an idea on what could cause this?

Sorry for not posting earlier. Just got back from my vacations.
I did not had any errors while compiling. Everything seemd to compile allright. I did not use the default config, since I wanted to add support for things that don't ome out of the box (ntfs, etc.)
Anyway, I ended up erasing Red Hat and loadig Slackware. I used the same options I used on RH for kernel compiling (except the mod. that RH does to the kernel.) and it is working very good (except for an issue with the modem :.)
Anyway, I may try posting again if I decide to give RH another try.
Merry Christmas to you too!
Did you try the latest RH kernel to see if had support?
Yes. I had support for everything. It just wouldn't boot up, staying on the error above.
Lemme guess. NVidia drivers?
NVidia card, but no driver loaded yet.
When does it do this? After the kernel is loaded, or before kudzu loads? By the looks of it, it seems to be a XFree86 prob, since it happening in "init 5". Can you get to a prompt after by doing "Ctrl+Alt+F1" (Or F2-F6)? If so, what are the areas of your /var/log/XFree86.0.log marked with "(EE)"??
