I was just wondering if someone might be able to tell me about all the different Debian ISOs. I mean I went to linuxiso.org and went to the Debian section and they have 7 ISOs...
Debian GNU/Linux - Disk 1 Generic boot (Non-US) 647MB
Debian GNU/Linux - Disk 1 Generic boot (US) 584MB
Debian GNU/Linux - Disk 2 'vanilla' boot 646MB
Debian GNU/Linux - Disk 3 'compact' boot 647MB
Debian GNU/Linux - Disk 4 'idepci' boot 641MB
Debian GNU/Linux - Disk 5 'bd2.4' boot 639MB
Debian GNU/Linux - Disk 6 642MB
Debian GNU/Linux - Disk 7 346MB
I get the first 2 they are kinda self explanitory... but what is up with the other 5??? Just curious

I believe the vanilla disk is 2.2.x kernel, the bf2.4 is a 2.4.x kernel. idepci stems from when some computers were still isa/mca/etc based, so the idepci one was new and experimental. It has additional drivers and such. The compact one should really load a very basic kernel configuration with very few modules. Great for servers, I should think. 6 and 7 should provide additional software, though I'm not certain what they provide. The Debian website should shed some additional insight into what is included on each disk. Not to mention, anything that I have said that is incorrect, they will correct.
Basically, you only need the first one or possibly the second one. Otherwise, you can apt-get the rest of the stuff (I have dial-up and it's no big deal).
Cheers
