Knoppix being a debian based distro I'd say get the stock kernel from kernel.org, apt-get install kernel-package, then configure the kernel as usual and run [/i]make-kpkg --revision custom.1 kernel-image[/i] in the source dir. Then you have a .deb file that contains your compiled kernel and the modules. Install it with dpkg -i kernel-image-<version>.deb.
What does it mean when you say, get stock kernel, apt-get install kernel-package?

Am I suppose to get the kernel version I want(2.4.20)? What if I already have it downloaded, can I just start with the make-kpkg --revision stuff after I configure the kernel?
